  5. Q: What are MIDI karaoke files?
  6. A: MIDI karaoke files are Standard General MIDI files that have
  7. song lyrics built into one of the tracks according to a certain
  8. format. Using a program that supports this format, the lyrics 
  9. can be displayed on the screen in synch with the music.

  11. Q: What hardware do I need to be able to use MIDI karaoke files?
  12. A: You need a General MIDI synthesizer or a sound card to hear the
  13. music. It is recommended to use a wavetable synthesizer sound 
  14. card as opposed to FM synthesizier.

  16. Q: What programs can I use to play MIDI karaoke files to be able
  17. to see the lyrics?
  18. A: At this point I know of five programs that can play MIDI karaoke
  19. files.

  39. If someone knows of another program that can play MIDI karaoke files,
  40. please let me know.

  42. Q: Can I use a regular MIDI file player to play MIDI karaoke files?
  43. A: Yes, however you will not be able to see the lyrics. If your 
  44. MIDI player can not play files with an extension other than .MID,
  45. rename the MIDI karaoke files from .KAR to .MID extension.

  47. Q: Where did the files in this archive come from?
  48. A: Most of the files in this archive are the MIDI files I downloaded 
  49. from various places on internet. Originally they did not have the built-
  50. in lyrics. I entered the lyrics myself. Other files I sequenced myself.

  52. Q: Are the files in this archive copyrighted?
  53. A: I hope if some of them are, they are free to be distributed. As I 
  54. said the previous answer, I downloaded them from the net, and with the 
  55. exception of my own sequences which are public domain, this archive 
  56. does not contain anything that has not been uploaded before. If some 
  57. of the files in this archive are NOT supposed to be distributed, I was 
  58. not the one who uploaded them in the first place.

  60. Q: Where can I get more MIDI karaoke files?
  61. A: More MIDI karaoke files can be BOUGHT from Tune 1000 and their dis-
  62. tributers, which are various music stores. For more information call
  63. Tune 1000 at 1-800-363-TUNE. The files obtained from Tune 1000 are 
  64. NOT public domain and should not be distributed. The current list price 
  65. for a disk with 10 songs is $24.95.
  66. Also Clubhouse Productions makes MIDI karaoke files that you can 
  67. download. Look for those at archive.epas.utoronto.ca.

  69. Q: What is the MIDI karaoke file format?
  70. A: Load one of the MIDI karaoke files into a sequencer to examine
  71. the contents of the tracks of the file.
  72. The first track contains text events that are used to make the 
  73. file recognizable by the Soft Karaoke program as the MIDI Karaoke 
  74. file. @KMIDI KARAOKE FILE is used to for that purpose. @V0100 
  75. is the program version number. Anything starting with @I is any
  76. information you want to include in the file.
  77. The second track contains the text events for the lyrics of the
  78. song. The first event is @LENGL. It identifies the language the
  79. words are in, which is English. The next couple of events start
  80. with @T which identifies the title of the songs. You can have up
  81. to three events like these. The text of those events will show
  82. up in the upper right corner of the Soft Karaoke program window.
  83. The rest of the track contains the words of the song. Each 
  84. event is the syllable that is supposed to be sung at the time
  85. of the event. If the text starts with \, it means to clear the
  86. screen and show the words at the top of the screen. If the text
  87. starts with /, it means to go to the next line.

  89. Q: How can you make a MIDI karaoke file from a regular General MIDI
  90. file?
  91. A: Tune 1000 is working on a program that will handle the task. It 
  92. should be out very soon. But you can use your favorite sequencer
  93. to record NOTE ON events and later convert them to TEXT and enter
  94. the lyrics of the song. That's what I did.
